David Alan Grier strolled down memory lane, chatting about the powerful mix of comedy and hip-hop culture on “In Living Color.”
Talking to AllHipHop, the seasoned comedian and actor spilled the beans on his long career and his newest movie project, The American Society of Magical Negroes.
During the interview, Grier dived into how hip-hop shaped his journey, especially on the groundbreaking sketch comedy show “In Living Color.” From 1990 to 1994, the show shook up TV in many ways, notably by blending hip-hop culture into the mainstream.
Rosie Perez played a crucial role in incorporating hip-hop into the comedy sketches of “In Living Color.” “It was Rosie Perez because her position was not official,” Grier revealed, shedding light on Perez’s unofficial but vital behind-the-scenes role. “She was the one who brought all these emerging hip-hop acts onto ‘In Living Color.’”
As the show’s choreographer, Perez had her ear to the ground in the hip-hop scene and used her influence to introduce hip-hop music and artists to a wider audience.
According to Grier, Perez had a special talent for persuading the show’s creator, Keenan Ivory Wayans, of the cultural and entertainment value these artists could bring. “[She] convinced Keenan, here we should put these people on, put these people on, and so it was all hands on deck,” Grier recalled about Perez’s convincing efforts.
This initiative played a significant role in cementing “In Living Color’s” reputation as a show that was not only hilarious but also culturally impactful and groundbreaking.
The show featured performances by notable hip-hop acts like Heavy D & The Boyz, Queen Latifah, and Public Enemy, blending the lyrical and musical creativity of hip-hop with the show’s comedic brilliance.
Grier reminisced about the show’s creative vibe, highlighting its open-door policy for creativity: “You can sit here and waste all this time or do your work, come with your characters, and we’ll give you some daylight if they’re good.”

As the conversation shifted to the present, Grier pondered on the evolution of hip-hop. “It’s funny, I’m trying to think, sometimes I don’t even know what hip-hop is anymore,” highlighting the genre’s vast growth and transformations over the years.
