Nevada couple arrested after autistic son found in metal cage
In Henderson, Nevada, a shocking incident has taken place. A couple was arrested after their 11-year-old autistic son was discovered confined in a metal cage. Authorities conducted a wellness check on Tuesday morning following a request from the Clark County School District. The child’s school was concerned about the his prolonged absence from school.
Upon arrival, Henderson police officers found the boy in a large metal enclosure. He was wearing only a diaper, with feces smeared on the floor. The home was described as having inhospitable living conditions. There were rooms that contained no furniture. Also, trash was scattered throughout.
The parents, Misty Scanlan, 46, and Jeffery Scanlan, 41, were charged with felony child abuse or neglect. They were unable to provide immediate comments to NBC News regarding the allegations.
The situation came to light, earlier that day. A truancy officer visited the home, but received no response at the door. However, he heard a child screaming inside. A subsequent visit by a police officer led to the discovery. This is when Jeffrey Scanlan allowed the officer inside, claiming their children were ill.
Jeffrey Scanlan reportedly told law enforcement that the cage was used as a containment method for his son’s aggressive behavior. Scanlan attributed this behavior to a severe diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder. This use of a “semi-punitive measure” has raised serious concerns about the child’s welfare and the appropriateness of the methods used for handling his behavior.
Following their arrest, the Scanlans posted bond and are scheduled for a court appearance in May. This case sparked discussions on child welfare, parental responsibility. Also, the care of children with special needs.
