GALLOWAY TOWNSHIP — Stockton University’s Introduction to Hip Hop Culture class hosted a block party Tuesday at the school’s Multicultural Center, celebrating the genre’s music, culture, dance and graffiti.

The event included performances by multiple artists and DJs, as well as interactive activities such as jump rope, chalk graffiti, trivia booths, prizes and cornhole games all put on by the students, Professor Donnetrice Allison said.

“The Intro to Hip Hop block party was a great way for students to showcase what they learned throughout the semester about hip-hop and the culture. The event itself was fun, the music was great, and it was so nice to see so many students come together,” said sophomore Lilli Scalzo, a student in the class.

Guests learned about aspects of hip-hop’s influence and legacy, from its rhythmic beats to trivia to graffiti.

“The purpose of this class is to examine hip-hop culture based on history, dance, art, music, politics, business and its impact on the global society, and to examine the impact on race and racism on the culture,” Allison said.

Hip-hop and its culture can offer valuable insights into social issues, history and personal narratives, making them essential for a well-rounded education that reflects diverse perspectives, Allison said.

“Incorporating hip-hop into education fosters inclusivity, creativity and critical thinking skills, empowering students to connect with and understand the world around them in meaningful ways,” Scalzo said.
